Cabbage Kootu

Kootu is a lentil ( usually yellow moong dal) and vegetable stew. There are many different ingredients that can be ground to paste and various vegetables that can be added to make Kootu.

Ingredients :

  • 1/2 a cabbage about 250g cut into small squares
  • 1// cup boiled moong dal
  • 1/4 cup fresh coconut
  • 1 heap tsp jeera/ cumin
  • 6/7  dry red chilly ( mine is a variety that gives more colour than heat so go as per your level of spice)
  • Pinch of hing
  • Salt
  • Few sprigs of curry leaves
  • Tsp of oil
  • Tsp of chana dal

How to make:

  1. Cut the cabbage and boil in a pan with Little water and salt.
  2. Boil moong dal in the cooker and add this to the boiled cabbage.
  3. Let the two boil together
  4. Grind together coconut, jeera and red chilly with little water into a fine paste.
  5. Add this paste to the cabbage and moong dal and boil well with salt and curry leaves.
  6. Give it a good boil till all the rawness goes away.
  7. It should be in sambhar consistency
  8. Give tadka of Chanadal in a tsp of oil.
  9. Serve this can be kootu with rice.
