Bisi bele Baath

This actually means (. Hot dal rice) in Kannada. This is a super nutritious rice filled with goodness of veggies, dal, rice , spices and ghee.

Ingredients :

  • 2 cup mixes veggies chopped into chunks like for sambhar ( brinjal, red pumpkin, white pumpkin, peas, potato) do not use carrots
  • 2 cups rice
  • 1 cup tur dal
  • 1 big lemon size tamarind with juice extracted
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tbsp mustard seeds
  • Few sprigs of curry leaves
  • To roast and grind d to paste
  • 4 tbsp channa dal
  • 3 tbsp dhaniya seeds
  • 12/15 dry red chilly ( mine is a non Spicy variety but gives great colour so pleas add according to your taste + 2 green chilly)
  • 1 tsp methi seeds
  • 1 .5 inch piece of cinnamon
  • 3 tbsp coconut fresh
  • Oil to roast

How to make:

  1. In a pan first add oil and roast all ingredients listed u see paste except coconut.once light brown remove cool and grind with the coconut. Add little water and make a coarse paste
  2. Wash and cut all the veggies and add half the amount of tamarind water and salt and boil till cooked
  3. In a cooker combine the rice and dal and add 6-7 cups of water and let it cook for 4-5 whistles. We need it a big mushy
  4. Once the veggies are cooked add the ground d paste the rice and dal mixture , curry leaves , remaining tamarind juice and bring it to a float khichadi consistency.
  5. Let this boil a bit
  6. In a tadka pan add ghee and mustard seeds and pour over bisi bele baath
  7. Serve as is or with a side of raita .
