Horse Gram Chutney

Horse gram is a power house legume . Rich in protein and also abundant in calcium, iron . The benefits are immense.

I’m sharing a horse gram chutney which goes well with either rice, dosa, Idli or even  Roti

Ingredients :

  • 1 cup horse gram/ kulith
  • 1/4 cup freshly grated coconut
  • 1 big lemon size tamarind
  • 1 tbsp jaggery
  • 4/5 dry red chilly
  • 1 tsp oil
  • Salt

How to make:


  1. Dry roast the horse gram on low heat till it starts to pop and changes colour to dark brown. This could take about 5-10 minutes
  2. Cool it completely
  3. In the same pan add the tsp oil and roast the red chilly, tamarind
  4. Combine this with the horse gram, coconut, salt and jaggery in a grinder and grind by adding water
  5. This will require more water than a usual chutney as the horse gram keeps thickening
  6. Grind till you get a smooth chutney.
  7. Delicious chutney is ready
  8. Serve it as a side to a dosa, rice , Roti or idly.
