Ingredients :
Ingredients for the Sambhar paste :
- 1.5tbsp channa dal
- 2 tbsp whole dhania seeds
- ½ tsp methi seeds
- 1 inch piece of dalchini / cinnamon stick
- Small nimbu size ball of tamarind
- 2 to 3 tbsp. freshly grated coconut
- 1 tsp oil (I used cold press ground oil )
- 3 Red chilli whole about ( depending on the spice level . I used green chilly as I had run out of red chilli. Traditionally though red chilly is what is used in sambha
Ingredients for sambhar
- 2 medium sized Sweet potato
- ½ tsp turmeric
- Salt
- 1 tsp mustard
- 5/6 curry leaves
- 1 tsp ghee
- 1 to 1.5 cup cooked tur dal
How to make:
- Sambhar paste :In a pan put the oil and roast all the above ingredients except coconut. Once the chana dal turns golden brown remove from flame and cool. Add this to the grinder jar along with coconut and grind to a paste with some water. The paste should be slightly grainy and not very runny for sambhar.
- Take 2 medium sized sweet potato and cut into semi circles about ½ inch thick. Wash really well. I have kept the skin on as mine is organic. Do wash thoroughly multiple times as there’s lots of mud in sweet potato skin.
- Take this in a kadai. Add enough water to cover the potatoes. Add salt and turmeric. Let it boil and cook till just done. This is very important. Do not over cook.
- Now is the time to add the cooked tur dal, the paste and check salt and let it boil on low for about 5/7 minutes.
- Temper with mustard and curry leaves
- Piping and delicious Sweet potato sambhar is ready.
